Ein großes Anliegen des Autors ist die Darstellung des Trochos Systems des Ioannes Kukuzeles. Dies ist ein tetraphones System, in dem jedes Intervall sowohl das Zentrum bzw. die Basis eines bestimmten Modus sein kann, als auch das Zentrum jedes anderen Modus durch die Möglichkeit der Transposition. Der Trochos wird als eine Art Labyrinth bezeichnet, in dem, mit Hilfe der Intonationsformeln, von einem Modus zum anderen fortgeschritten wird. Genaue dreidimensionale Darstellungen geben ein klares Bild dieses Systems.

Der vorliegende Band gibt in erster Linie einen guten Einblick in das tonale System der orthodoxen Kirche, zum Teil auch in das tonale System der frühen westlichen Kirche. Durch die Musikbeispiele können auch Personen, die mit der Materie nicht so vertraut sind, eine Vorstellung von der östlichen Gesangstradition gewinnen.

The author’s main concern is the representation of the trochos system by Ioannes Kukuzeles [14th c.]. Within this tetraphonic tone system, each degree of the mode can be the centre or base of a certain church tone as well as the centre of all the other tones due to the possibility of transposition. The trochos (“wheel”) is regarded as a kind of maze and each step from one tone to another can be done by an intonation formula. Precise three-dimensional images offer a clear imagination of the tonal system.

The present volume offers mainly an insight into the tonal system of the Orthodox church, partly also into the medieval tonal system of the Western church. Thanks to field recordings even readers who are not familiar with the subject, will get an idea about Eastern chant traditions.

The book has a prologue, an analytical index, a list of illustrations, a bibliography, and a CD supplement with sound examples — including field recordings from Bulgaria. The content list can be also downloaded as pdf.
